Next Steps Center

The NBISD Next Steps Center is designed to support all students (pre-kindergarten through 12th grade) as they prepare for college and career readiness. The NBISD Next Steps Center defines college as any post-secondary education that includes: technical school, military career, certificate program, two-year college, four-year university, or professional degree program.

The NBISD Next Steps Center helps all campuses incorporate college and career readiness skills to provide students with an awareness of college readiness, career, and industry skill standards.

Through the Next Steps Center, students and their parents can also access information about:

  • how to apply for federal financial aid
  • the automatic admission of certain students to general academic teaching institutions
  • the availability of programs in the district under which a student can earn college credit, including advanced placement programs, dual credit programs, joint high school and college credit programs

An ACT Fee Waiver covers the registration and late fees for either the full ACT with writing or no writing, or section retesting (up to three subjects). The waiver covers one report to a student’s high school and up to six college choices (at the time he or she registers). After registration, the student can request unlimited regular score reports for free. Waivers may NOT be used to pay for any additional fees, products, or services.

Students with documented disabilities may be eligible for accommodations on ACT exams. Students who receive an accommodation in school or have an Individualized Education Program (IEP) or 504 Plan do not automatically qualify for the accommodation on ACT exams.  Students cannot take the ACT with accommodations unless their request for accommodations has been approved by ACT.

Texas Success Initiative Assessment (TSI)

The TSI Assessment is the standard by which Texas public post-secondary institutions (2-year, 4-year, vocational, trade, etc.) evaluate a student’s readiness for college-level course work in the areas of reading, writing, and math. If a student does not meet the TSI benchmark scores, the college will assume a student is not ready to take on college-level coursework. In turn, the college will require the student to take developmental coursework to build knowledge and skills. This required developmental coursework costs money and prevents students from jumping right into courses that will apply toward the completion of a college degree. Our goal is to enable students to avoid this coursework by helping students earn those benchmark scores on the TSI.

Incoming college and dual credit students in Texas are required to take the TSI Assessment, unless they are already exempt, to determine readiness for college-level work.

You will need to take the TSI if you are enrolling in the following:

  • An Northeast Lakeview dual credit English or Math course
  • An Northeast Lakeview dual credit course
  • College courses as a freshman

You do NOT have to take the TSI to enroll in OnRamps Dual Enrollment courses.

Taking the TSI can save you money. By scoring high enough on this test, you may be able to bypass developmental courses when you start college.

Taking the TSI can save you time. By being able to bypass developmental courses, you can go right into courses that apply to your degree.

For prospective dual credit students, the TSI will allow you to take college-level courses.

2. Complete the Pre-Assessment

This pre-assessment is required by the state of Texas to be completed BEFORE a student can take the TSI. It also provides students with more information about the TSI as well as valuable practice.

  • Students must create an account for the Practice APP if one has not already been created. Use your personal email address.
  • After successfully logging in, select Texas Success Initiative 2.0 Pre-Assessment Activity (TSIA-2-PAA).
  • Click on Begin Pre-Assessment Activity.
  • Choose New Braunfels High School as the campus where you plan to take the TSIA2.
  • Forward your Certificate of Completion to Mrs. Morris or Mrs. Horner.

You will not be allowed to test unless Mrs. Morris or Mrs. Horner has a copy of your Certificate of Completion.

3. Take the TSI

  • Decide on your top 3 schools you want to attend after high school.
  • Apply for your top 3 schools through:

  • Meet with college and/or military recruiters of your top 3 choices.
  • Send your transcripts through Parchment to the colleges/schools you applied to.
  • Finalize your resume in high school.
  • Send your resume to the colleges/schools you applied to.
  • Apply for FAFSA/TAFSA (financial aid).
  • Apply for scholarships.
  • Learn about financial responsibilities and student loans.
  • Ask 3 staff members to be references on your behalf.
  • Give plenty of time for your references to write a recommendation letter.
  • Send your resume to your references for them to use as a guide when writing the letters.
  • Send thank-you notes to your references after receiving the letters.
  • Once accepted to your school of choice, meet with an advisor from that school about your degree plan.
  • Graduate high school and take the NEXT STEP!
