Students at New Braunfels ISD experienced the power of connection and communication this year through a special pen pal partnership between a third grade ELAR class at Veramendi Elementary School and the New Braunfels High School Unicorn Handlers.

Throughout the school year, students exchanged letters, sharing stories about their lives, interests, school experiences, and encouragement with one another. 

The program gave students an authentic and meaningful way to practice their writing skills while also building relationships across grade levels.

Earlier this month, the pen pals had the opportunity to meet face-to-face for the first time as Alexandra Dowd, teacher at NBHS and Unicorn Handler sponsor, had her students travel to Veramendi. 

During the special gathering, students made friendship bracelets, shared cookies, and enjoyed spending time together after months of corresponding through letters.

“It has been a wonderful opportunity watching my students use writing as an authentic tool to communicate,” said Erika Gilbreth, Veramendi teacher. “The NBHS Unicorn Handlers were so sweet and engaged with the students.”

The experience created lasting memories for both the elementary students and high school leaders, highlighting the positive impact of mentorship, communication, and community within New Braunfels ISD.
