The New Braunfels High School volleyball team is moving on in the playoffs after a dominant sweep over San Antonio Highlands in the area round at Alamo Heights on Monday, winning 25-8, 25-10, 25-5.

With the victory, the Unicorns improved to 43-5 on the season and claimed the Area Championship, extending their winning streak to 20 consecutive matches. The team is currently ranked No. 5 among 5A schools by the Texas Girls Coaches Association and is also closing in on a school record — the most wins in a single season (46), set back in 2012.

The team is three wins shy of a spot in the state championship, which the Unicorns last won in 2005. Last year, the team had a deep playoff run, which ended in a five-set regional final heartbreaker to eventual state champion Corpus Christi Flour Bluff. This year’s regional final could be a rematch between the two teams.

The Unicorns will face the winner of Tuesday’s match between Corpus Christi Veterans Memorial and McAllen in the regional semifinals that will be played on Thursday. The match location will be either Victoria West if Corpus Christi Veterans Memorial wins or Gregory-Portland if McAllen wins.
