The 2024 NBISD staff convocation at Wursthalle was a momentous occasion, as it was one of the first times that an event has been held on the historic grounds, aside from Wurstfest.
The event took place on Aug. 8, on the grounds and in the hall where NBISD teachers and staff were greeted with a welcome that included coffee trucks and photo booths. The atmosphere also had appearances from the Dragon and Unicorn mascots, who posed for photos, alongside spirited performances by band members, cheerleaders, and dance team members from both New Braunfels and Long Creek high schools.
This year’ theme for Convocation and the entire school year is More than Myth.
“Our theme this year is ‘More than Myth,’ and I want this theme to remind us that while our mascots are legendary, it is the real, everyday efforts of our teachers and staff that make our district extraordinary,” said Dr. Laurelyn Arterbury. “Your dedication to our students is what truly sets us apart.”
Convocation was emceed by long-time NBHS teachers James Reno and Kevin Korpi (wearing custom NBISD lederhosen t-shirts, as they kept the energy high throughout the morning.
Notable speakers included NBISD Teachers of the Year Melissa Zúñiga from New Braunfels High School and Nikki Hutchison from Walnut Springs Elementary, as well as Arterbury, NBISD Vice President Nancy York, Wurstfest Executive Director Jade Nicola, and Summer Ray of the NBISD Education Foundation.
A special highlight of the convocation was a surprise visit from Dr. Jeff Goldhorn of the Education Service Center 20. He presented Melissa Zúñiga with the secondary Regional Teacher of the Year Award. She now will move on to the state competition.
Adding to the fun, staff participated in various games, including a pretzel (made with a pool noodle) throwing contest, a book holding competition, and of course a Chicken Dance competition. Staff members were gifted “More than Myth” t-shirts—NBISD’s theme for the year, as the district proudly brings the Dragons of Long Creek High School online. They also received pins representing either the Unicorns or Dragons, which will be a perfect addition to their Wurstfest hats.
As for the food, staff ate true Wurstfest-style grab as they dined on sausage wraps and pretzels during the day of festivities.
