The postseason for girls soccer is off to an electrifying start for New Braunfels ISD, as both the New Braunfels High School Unicorns and Long Creek High School Dragons girls soccer teams delivered impressive bi-district victories to punch their tickets to the next round.
Competing in Class 5A Division I, the Unicorns stormed out to a commanding 3-0 lead by halftime. Leander mounted a second-half comeback attempt, netting two goals, but the Unicorns held strong down the stretch to secure a 3-2 victory at Unicorn Stadium last Friday.
With the win, New Braunfels now turns its focus to the area round, where they will face San Antonio Highlands. After winning the coin flip, the Unicorns earned the right to host the matchup, set for 6 p.m. on Tuesday, March 24th at Unicorn Stadium. Highlands enters the game following a bi-district win over Southwest Legacy. The winner will move on to face either Flour Bluff or McAllen in the regional semifinals.
Meanwhile, the Long Creek Dragons made history with a dominant performance of their own. In just their first playoff appearance, the Dragons captured their first-ever postseason victory, defeating Burnet 5-2 in Hutto.
Competing in Class 4A Division I ahead of their move to 5A next season, Long Creek’s offensive explosion set the tone early and never let up. The Dragons will move on to face La Vernia in the area round. The matchup is scheduled for Tuesday, March 24th at Clemens High School, with kickoff set for 8 p.m.
La Vernia also enters the contest with momentum after a convincing 5-1 win over Uvalde in bi-district play. The winner of Tuesday’s game will advance to take on either Rio Hondo or Calallen.
