Lamar Elementary School marked a historic milestone on Monday, September 15th, as the campus officially opened its brand-new facility with a ribbon cutting ceremony. After 102 years of serving generations of students in New Braunfels, Lamar’s legacy continues in a building that blends fresh beginnings with a deep sense of tradition.
The event brought together Lamar staff, students, parents, community members, the NBISD Board of Trustees, and Superintendent Dr. Laurelyn Arterbury to celebrate the opening. This campus was built as part of the 2021 Bond Program that was approved by voters.
The project team was Huckabee Architects and Bartlett Cocke Contractors. The old Lamar building has been repurposed to house Two Rivers High School, DAEP and other administrative offices.
“What a truly special day this is. Looking out and seeing so many familiar faces—our families, staff, students, and neighbors—fills me with so much pride and gratitude,” said Lamar Principal Chris Russell. Today, as we gather at this beautiful new building, we’re celebrating more than just walls and windows. We’re celebrating a school community that has been a part of New Braunfels for the past 102 years!”
Student leaders from the campus also participated in the event, delivering the Pledge of Allegiance. Tours were also provided by the students and they were on hand to answer any questions.
“Tonight, though, is about more than a new building. It’s about a legacy. For 102 years, Lamar Elementary has stood as a cornerstone of the New Braunfels community,” Arterbury said. Generations of families have walked through Lamar’s doors. This school has shaped lives, built connections, and been part of countless stories that make up the history of this incredible community.”
Eric Bergquist, NBISD Board President, also was on hand to share about keeping the history of Lamar in a new facility.
“What a special day this is—not just for New Braunfels ISD, but for every student, family, and staff member connected to Lamar Elementary,” he said. “Tonight is not only the start of a new chapter—it’s also a celebration of a story that has been written for 102 years.”
With the ribbon officially cut, Lamar Elementary begins its next chapter—standing brand new at 102 and carrying forward the traditions, stories, and spirit that have made it a pillar of the New Braunfels community for over a century. A photo gallery from the event can be found here.
