New Braunfels High School recognized four student-athletes as they took the next step in their athletic and academic journeys during National Signing Day, held in the NBHS Gym on April 16th. They were joined by fellow students, teammates, coaches and family members during the signing ceremony.
The following Unicorn athletes have signed their National Letters of Intent:
Alyana McGarity – Basketball – Southern University at Shreveport
Alyana McGarity has officially signed to play basketball at Southern University at Shreveport, where she will continue her athletic and academic journey on a full scholarship. Southern University at Shreveport is located in Louisiana and is a member of the NJCAA.
McGarity has been a key contributor and leader on the court throughout her career. As a freshman, she earned All-District Honorable Mention and was named Defensive MVP. In her sophomore year, she took home Second Team All-District honors and was voted Team MVP. Her junior season saw her again named Second Team All-District, as well as the offensive MVP. She capped off her senior year by earning a spot on the First Team All-District.
In addition to her district accolades, McGarity was selected to play in the San Antonio Sports All-Star Game earlier this year.She is the daughter of Jimmy Walker and Teresa Carrera.
Sophie Larsen – Beach Volleyball – Southern Virginia University
Sophie Larsen has signed to play beach volleyball at Southern Virginia University, a NCAA Division III institution located in Buena Vista, Virgina. Larsen will join the team as a Preferred Walk-On, and will attend the university on an academic scholarship.
As part of her beach volleyball team, she earned an impressive 2nd place finish at the National Beach Championship and has medaled in seven tournaments across Texas.
Larsen also competed and earned many accolades with the Unicorn volleyball team. She was named Academic All-State and Academic All-District, recognizing her excellence in academics while balancing the demands of athletics. She also received the Heart and Hustle Award. She is the daughter of Francesca and Jon Larsen.
Zoe Shuttlesworth – Golf – Piedmont University
Zoe Shuttlesworth has signed to continue her golf career at Piedmont University, a NCAA Division III school located in Demorest, Georgia. Shuttlesworth will join the Piedmont golf team on a partial scholarship.
Shuttlesworth has placed at the district level during her freshman, sophomore, and junior seasons. Her junior year was especially notable, as she claimed 2nd place overall individually at the district tournament.
In addition to her district success, Shuttlesworth also advanced to the regional tournament in both her sophomore and junior years.
She is the daughter of Sarah and Chris Shuttlesworth.
Rebecca Zúñiga– Track and Cross Country – Endicott College
Rebecca Zúñiga has signed to continue her athletic career in Cross Country and Track at Endicott College, a NCAA Division III institution located in Beverly, Massachusetts. Zúñiga will join the team as a Preferred Walk-On.
She was a Top 5 runner on the team that qualified for Regionals twice, including the 2023 squad that won the District Championship.
In addition to her athletic achievements, Zúñiga has also been recognized for her academic and personal excellence. She is a two-time Academic All-District honoree and was awarded the Kennady Fontenot Character and Leadership Award in 2024. (Fontenot is a former Unicorn who now runs for Texas A&M)
Rebecca is the daughter of Melissa and Marc Zúñiga.
