NBISD will rezone elementary schools as two new campuses are set to open in the Fall of 2025 because of growth and aging facilities in the district. In August, the new Lamar Elementary School off Loop 337 will open as part of the Unicorn feeder pattern. Legend Point Elementary also will open in August as part of the Dragon feeder pattern.

Feedback from a recent strategic planning survey helped with the creation of the first scenario for new attendance zones. The priorities guiding the development of these zones include keeping school enrollments at or below building capacity and assigning students to the school closest to their homes. Additional goals aim to minimize the frequency of changes in a student’s academic career, establish aligned feeder patterns to ensure students stay with a consistent cohort from elementary through high school, and keep students from the same neighborhood together. These priorities reflect the district’s commitment to maintaining stability, community connections, and equitable access to education across all campuses.

An in-person Community Forum about Scenario #1 will be held for all stakeholders, regardless of campus, from 6-7 pm on December 18th in the Klein Road Elementary Cafeteria, located at 2620 Klein Way. Online community feedback opportunities will be available from December 10th to December 20th.

Feedback taken from community members will be used to make adjustments to scenario one and create the second scenario of attendance rezoning. An in-person Community Forum will also be conducted for Scenario #2. It will be held for all stakeholders, regardless of campus, from 6-7 pm on January 23rd in the Veramendi Elementary Cafeteria, which is located at 2290 Oak Run Pkwy. Online feedback will be accepted from January 8th until January 24th. The same feedback and adjustment process will take place before a final scenario is presented to the board for discussion in February, followed by approval in March.

The goal of NBISD’s attendance zoning process is to make sure that all students have access to a high-quality education as well as creating new opportunities for our students districtwide. By engaging in thoughtful planning with community stakeholders, NBISD aims to continue working closely with the community to fulfill our duty to remain fiscally responsible and to support the long-term growth and success of our district. 

Additionally, NBISD recently announced a five-year strategic plan – Future Focused 2030: A Collaborative Vision for NBISD. This vision was developed by NBISD stakeholders and includes what the district should prioritize over the next five years as we continue to grow, innovate and respond to the needs of our students.

Pillar 2 of NBISD’s new strategic plan looks to support more engaging, relevant and future ready learning experiences for all of our students. The district wants to make sure that students will have access to a variety of learning experiences that support future readiness in our ever-changing world.

“In response to elementary enrollment numbers and with guidance from our Strategic Plan, we identified the opportunity to open a district wide elementary magnet school for NBISD students at one of our current elementary facilities,” said Dr. Laurelyn Arterbury, NBISD’s Superintendent of Schools.

A Future Ready Learning Implementation Team will be created in early 2025 to begin planning for the first elementary magnet school in district history. The new school is set to open in August 2026 at the current County Line Elementary campus. With that being said, County Line Elementary will be closed after the 2025-2026 school year and students who live in the County Line attendance zone will be rezoned to another campus near their homes. 

Dr. Arterbury added, “Reopening County Line as a magnet school is an innovative and responsive solution for our community who is telling us they want to see future ready learning experiences.”

Also, with one of the two brand new elementaries opening being the new Lamar, this means that the current Lamar campus will be repurposed into the School of Choice and the Disciplinary Alternative Education Program, also known as DAEP.
