New Braunfels ISD has named Omar Diaz as the new principal of Carl Schurz Elementary School. Diaz has served as the assistant principal at the campus since 2023. He has also served in NBISD as a bilingual summer school principal.

He is set to begin his new role on July 21. Diaz will be replacing Orphalinda Bazan who announced her retirement earlier this year.

“I’m honored and humbled to continue serving the entire Carl Schurz community,” Diaz said. “I look forward to working with all stakeholders to ensure every child thrives—because we are better together.”

Diaz is a recent graduate of the NBISD Leadership Academies Aspiring Principal Cohort as well as the Region 20 Bilingual and English as a Second Language Administrators Mentorship Academy. He has a strong background in bilingual education, which is beneficial to his role at Carl Schurz, one of NBISD’s dual-language campuses.

Prior to NBISD, Diaz taught music and was recognized as a statewide semi-finalists for the prestigious H-E-B Excellence in Education awards in 2022 and 2023. In 2018, he was the district teacher of the year for San Marcos CISD.

Diaz holds a bachelor’s degree in music with a minor in Spanish. He also has a master’s degree in educational administration from Lamar University.

“Mr. Diaz is a proven leader, and we are so excited to have him as the new principal of Carl Schurz Elementary,” said NBISD Superintendent Dr. Laurelyn Arterbury. “His strong relationships with the staff, students and parents are invaluable to NBISD, and we are confident that under his leadership CSE will flourish.”

Mr. Diaz is a resident of New Braunfels along with his wife, Christina, and their two daughters Theodora and Olive.
