New Braunfels ISD has named Sara DeLuna as the new principal of Veramendi Elementary, bringing 14 years of educational leadership experience and a proven record of student and staff success to the campus.

DeLuna has served as assistant principal at Lamar Elementary since 2023, where she has played a key role in improving student outcomes, supporting teachers, and leading through significant campus transitions.

“I am deeply honored to serve the Veramendi community as principal. I believe the strongest schools are built through intentional leadership, meaningful relationships, and a steadfast belief in every child’s potential,” DeLuna said. “I look forward to partnering with our students, staff, and families to build on Veramendi’s strong foundation and create a school where every child is known, every educator is supported, and every family feels they belong.”

Throughout her career in NBISD, DeLuna has earned many accolades. She is a graduate of the NBISD Aspiring Principal Leadership Academy and has been recognized as NBISD Assistant Principal of the Year at the district’s annual Excellence Awards. She also participated in the N2 Assistant Principal Leadership Academy and was named Teacher of the Year in both 2014 and 2018. Additionally, she was selected as a regional finalist for the H-E-B Excellence in Education Awards.

In addition to her role as assistant principal, DeLuna has served as a summer school principal for NBISD on three separate occasions.

Among her accomplishments as assistant principal, DeLuna helped lead Lamar Elementary to projected accountability growth from an 89 to a 92 rating. She also helped retain 93% of classroom teachers during the transition to the new Lamar Elementary campus and supported grades 3-5 in earning the top district rankings in English Language Arts Meets and Masters performance.

“Mrs. DeLuna has proven success as an assistant and summer school principal and is a great fit for Veramendi,” said NBISD Superintendent Dr. Laurelyn Arterbury. “We are so proud of Sara, and we are looking forward to seeing her doing great things as a principal.”

DeLuna earned a Bachelor of Science in Interdisciplinary Studies from Texas State University and a Master’s degree in Educational Administration from Concordia University.

Mrs. DeLuna and her husband, Rusty, are raising their son, Bennett, in New Braunfels. As both an educator and a parent of an NBISD student, she values the partnership between schools and families and is committed to ensuring every child has an exceptional educational experience.
