As a result of academic growth in New Braunfels ISD, Texas Education Commissioner Mike Morath visited NBISD’s Oak Run Middle School as accountability ratings were set to be released across the state on Friday, August 14.
The state’s A–F accountability system uses rigorous standards to measure school and district performance and provide a clear picture of student outcomes. The ratings provide an overview of student performance across three key areas: Student Achievement, School Progress and Closing the Gaps.
During his visit to Oak Run, Commissioner Morath presented to students, staff and community members in attendance and met with teachers to learn more about the work taking place on campus.
Oak Run Middle School earned an “A” rating in the 2026 accountability system, following tremendous growth in student performance.
“An A rated campus doesn’t just happen, it represents the tireless work of educators, the focus and dedication of students and a community’s support of its schools,” Morath said. “I’m grateful to have celebrated that Unicorn excellence today and look forward to Oak Run’s sustained success in the future.”
NBISD earned a “B” rating for 2026, which shows the continued dedication of NBISD students, teachers and staff to academic growth and student success.
“Our rating signifies the commitment of our NBISD staff, students and families who continue to work together to prepare every student for the future,” said NBISD Superintendent Dr. Laurelyn Arterbury.
As part of a statewide tour highlighting schools that have shown significant growth and achievement, TEA Commissioner Mike Morath selected Oak Run Middle School as one of only three stops on his 2026 A–F Accountability Ratings Tour.

STAAR scores account for 100% of a campus rating in all domains except at the high school level, which has other criteria measured as well. This means student performance measured on one day during the school year equates to a campus letter grade, according to Dr. Lani Norman, NBISD Chief Academic Officer.
NBISD is continuing its focus on academic growth through Future Focused 2030, NBISD’s five-year strategic plan. For the 2026–2027 school year, NBISD is focusing on three key areas within Future Focused 2030: Instructional Leadership, Whole Child Guidelines and Instructional Framework. These initiatives are designed to strengthen teaching and learning, provide greater consistency and clarity for educators, and increase accountability for student outcomes.
“Continued student growth is the result of the hard work and dedication of our students and staff every day,” Arterbury said. Our goal is to continue building on this momentum, strengthening instruction and supporting our students so we can improve our scores each year and ensure every student is prepared for future success.”
