The NBISD Board of Trustees met on January 13, 2025 for a regular meeting.
Highlights of this meeting’s Agenda include:

Recognition of School Board Appreciation Month
Governor Greg Abbott proclaimed January to be School Board Recognition Month here in Texas. During this month, we celebrate our school board and show gratitude for their countless hours of service they spend supporting our students and staff.
Ensuring an excellent education is the work of many, and local school members collaborate with teachers, parents, and stakeholders to promote state and national standards in ways that reflect the communities values, said Governor Abbott in his official proclamation.
The Carl Schurz Elementary Choir surprised the Board with a special performance during the meeting.
Approval of the 2025-2026 New Braunfels ISD Academic Calendar
The New Braunfels ISD Board of Trustees approved the 2025-2026 school calendar during a regular monthly Board of Trustees meeting that was held January 13th. The calendar includes holidays, early release dates, and staff work days.
NBISD teachers will return to work on August 5th, 2025, school will start on Monday, August 18th, 2025, and the last day of school will be Thursday, May 21st, 2026.
The district will observe the following student and staff holidays: Labor Day (Sept. 1); Comal County Fair Day (Sept. 26); Thanksgiving Break (Nov. 24-28), Winter Break (Dec. 22-Jan. 2); Martin Luther King Jr. Day (Jan. 19); Presidents’ Day (Feb. 16); Spring Break (March 9-13); Good Friday (April 3); and Easter Monday (April 6).
Additionally, the following days will be Student Holidays and Staff Work Days or Professional Development Days – Oct. 10; Oct. 13; Dec. 1; Feb. 13; and March 16.
The calendar includes one early release date for all grade levels on Dec. 19.
Discussion of Playground Purchase for Carl Schurz and Seele Elementary Schools
In the 2024 Bond, the voters approved funding for new playground equipment and sun shades at Seele and Carl Schurz elementaries under Proposition A. The funding provided will allow for the replacement of one of the playgrounds with shade structures.
The cost for these projects is expected to cost $300,000 each. The playgrounds are scheduled to be ready for the upcoming school year.
At Seele, the scope of work includes the demolishing of one of the existing playscapes and installation of the new playscape in that same area in the back of the school. At Carl Schurz, The scope of work includes a playscape structure to be installed next to one of the existing playgrounds and demolishing of another playground
Discussion of HVAC replacement at Lamar, Memorial, Walnut Springs, and County Line Elementary(s)
The 2024 Bond has maintenance HVAC replacement funding at Lamar, Memorial, Walnut Springs, and County Line Elementary(s) was up for discussion during the meeting. This co-op procurement is to have Trane Services and Automated Logic perform the work to replace these units in kind.
Cost for these projects will be a total of $316,000.
Consideration of an Order calling a Trustee Election to be Held by the New Braunfels Independent School District (the District) for Single Member District 1 and Two (2) – At Large Positions
A trustee election will be Held by NBISD, for Single Member District 1 and two At-Large Positions. The first day to apply for the election will be Wednesday, January 15th. Applications must be filed by February 14th. The election will be held on May 3rd.
The importance of calling the election is so those interested in running for election can file.
This election will be held in Comal and Guadalupe counties.
Consider Approval of the Purchase of Long Creek High School and New Braunfels High School Marching Band Uniforms
The Board approved new uniforms for the New Braunfels High School Marching Band. The uniforms are due to be replaced and have reached their life expectancy. The fine arts department has been working with the business office the past couple of years to best identify when the appropriate time would be to purchase new uniforms.
The lifespan of these uniforms is about 10 years. These uniforms are also machine washable which will save money on having to take the uniforms to the dry cleaners. These should be obtained by this summer and be ready for next year’s football and marching seasons.
The budget for these uniforms was $200,000 and the total cost came out to be $199,875.65.
With the growth of the Long Creek High School marching band, it is anticipated that there is a need to purchase additional uniforms. Based on student interest and the number of uniforms purchased from the 2021 Bond funds, there is a need to add more to their inventory to keep up with growth.
The funds from this project are coming from one-time purchases with a budget of $50,000.
