The NBISD Board of Trustees met on August 12, 2024 for a regular meeting. The agenda for this meeting featured the following:

Board Approves One-Time Employee Retention Payment
The NBISD Board of Trustees approved a one-time retention stipend for the 2024-2025 school year. Due to the challenges related to hiring and retaining district employees and as a result of the COVID-19 Pandemic, the Board of Trustees wanted to provide employees with the stipend, which will be paid through indirect costs from ESSER III Federal Grant Funds.
The recommended payments will be $1,000 to full-time employees and $500 to each part-time employee that is eligible. The total cost of the stipend will be $1,125,000. Payments will be made to eligible employees by the end of September.
In order to be eligible for the retention payment, an employee must be employed full-time or part-time with NBISD in a Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS) covered position; be employed with NBISD during the period of May 24, 2024, through September 15, 2024 with no pending or future separation notice having been filed and remain employed, not on administrative leave with or without pay, for the time period of May 24, 2024 through September 15, 2024.
Board Calls Special Trustee Election for Single Member District 4
The Board voted to call a special Trustee Election for Single Member District 4. This seat became vacant following the resignation of former trustee Jackie Sanders in April. The Board voted to fill her unexpired term of office for Single Member District 4 through a special election in November.
Applications will be accepted only for those who reside within District 4 until August 20th and election day will be November 5th. Those wishing to apply for a spot on November’s ballot must reside within the parameters of District 4. See the map which can be found here.
The Board of Trustees recently approved changes to Single-Member Trustee Election Districts to better align with NBISD’s communities of interest. The board hired a demographer to review and suggest any necessary changes to the current boundaries for Single-Member Trustee Districts in NBISD to represent the NBISD community better.
Those who are interested in running for the District 4 seat, can pick up an application form between 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the NBISD administration building located at 1000 N. Walnut Ave. The election packet is also available online.
Discussion of updates regarding the administration of non-prescription, over the counter medications
Beginning August 2024, ALL medications, over-the-counter and prescription medications, will require a doctor’s order. A prescription label will not suffice as a doctor’s order.
New Braunfels ISD, and other school districts throughout the region, are revising our medication procedures to ensure compliance with the Board of Nursing Rules, including the Nurse Practice Act. NBISD in partnership with our Medical Director Physician, has updated our standing medical delegation orders to include some over-the-counter medications. So what does this mean for Parents…
The following over-the-counter medications may be administered by a school nurse without an additional prescription from the student’s physician:
- Ibuprofen
- Acetaminophen
- Naproxen Sodium
- Guaifenesin
- Midol
- Dextromethorphan
- Calcium Carbonate (Tums)
- Diphenhydramine Cream
- Hydrocortisone Cream
- Throat lozenge
*The medications must be provided by the parent, in the original container with the parent’s written request.
*OTC medications to be given longer than 5 consecutive days must be prescribed per the student’s physician.
All other medications (over-the-counter and prescription) will require a doctor’s order to be administered by a nurse at school.
Board approves purchase of curricular resources
The Board approved the purchase of several curricular resources across various subject matters. Newsela ELA and Newsela Social Studies were both approved for purchase. Newsela is an online platform where students, grades 6-12, will have access to an online interactive cross-curricular learning model for History and English Language Arts (ELA). The program contains a vast array of meticulously curated and engaging articles that clearly align content, assessments and instructional support to the TEKS through Newsela ELA and Newsela Social Studies. NBISD was awarded funds for this purchase with the Interactive Online Learning competitive grant that was awarded through the Texas Education Agency (TEA).
IXL K-5 RLA/Math was also approved for purchase. IXL is an online program for Kinder-5th grade math and reading support that provides curriculum and instructional resources and the ability to analyze student performance based on a personalized learning plan.
Finally, the Canvas Learning Management System (LMS) was approved for purchase. Canvas LMS is provided to every third through twelfth grade student in NBISD as well as all academic staff members. Canvas allows teachers to organize syllabi, assignments, modules, rubrics, calendars, schedules, quizzes, turn in and turn out of assignments, grading and connecting other apps and platforms. Students organize their academic day-to-day through Canvas LMS by receiving all these same features assigned by their teachers.
Board Approves the New Braunfels ISD Student Code of Conduct
The board voted to approve the 2024-25 New Braunfels ISD Student Code of Conduct. No changes were made to the Student Code of Conduct this school year. Review the Student Code of Conduct on our website.
