Level 1 Grievances

Grievance Process

At New Braunfels ISD, we value open communication and want to make sure all concerns are handled quickly and fairly. If you ever have a question, complaint, or concern—whether you’re a parent, student, employee, or community member—we encourage you to start by reaching out at the campus or department level.

Our goal is always to resolve issues at the lowest possible level through open conversation. Most concerns can be addressed informally, but if a solution can’t be reached, you have the option to move forward through our formal grievance process. The first step of that process is known as a Level 1 Grievance, which allows you to share your concerns in writing so they can be reviewed and addressed appropriately.

Informal Resolution Steps

Step 1: Contact the involved individual
Most complaints and concerns can be resolved informally by contacting the person directly involved—such as a teacher, coach, assistant principal, or department director. The majority of issues are successfully resolved through open communication between the parties involved.

Step 2: Contact the campus administrator
If the issue cannot be resolved after speaking with the individual involved, the next step is to contact a campus administrator. Assistant principals are typically the first point of contact, followed by the principal if additional assistance is needed. Campus administrators are equipped to help facilitate solutions and ensure concerns are heard and addressed appropriately.

Step 3: Contact a district administrator
If campus-level efforts do not resolve the concern, parents or students may contact the NBISD Administration Center at (830) 643-5700. Staff can assist directly or connect you with the appropriate district administrator. If district administrators are unable to resolve the concern, you may choose to file a formal complaint as outlined below.

Formal Complaint Process

If an individual has not been able to resolve their complaint informally, they may file a formal grievance. The formal complaint process is structured and follows specific timelines and procedures as outlined in board policy. Because it is a formal process, it may not allow for the same type of dialogue as the informal steps, so we encourage individuals to complete all informal steps first whenever possible.

Formal grievances may be filed according to the following policies:

  • Employees: DGBA (LOCAL)

  • Parents/Students: FNG (LOCAL)

  • Community Members: GF (LOCAL

Even after initiating the formal grievance process, students and parents are encouraged to continue seeking informal resolution. A grievance may be withdrawn at any time if the concern is resolved. If you have completed the informal steps above and wish to file a formal grievance, please use the Level 1 Grievance Form linked below. This form allows you to submit your concern in writing so it can be reviewed and addressed in accordance with district policy.
