2014-2015 NBHS Students of the Month

Each month during the school year, two outstanding students from New Braunfels High School are honored as the Students of the Month and recognized at the monthly board meeting.

May 2015 - Jocilyn Estes and Tyler Buck

Jocilyn Estes has attended NBHS for the last four years.  During her time at NBHS, she served as student body president, National Honor Society Historian and Head Social Officer for the Monoceras.  She was a four-year Executive Board Member of Student Council, a three-year member of the Monoceras and two-year member of the Science Olympiad team. She is an AP Scholar of Distinction, a 2014 Girls State Representative and a member of the Youth Leadership New Braunfels Class of 2013.. She will be attending New York University (NYU) Abu Dhabi to study Social Research and Public Policy. She is the daughter of Kyle and Julie Estes.

Tyler Buck has attended NBHS for the past four years. Buck is a member of the National Honor Society, ranked 7th in his graduating class, a member of DECA and qualified for state in the Sports & Entertainment Marketing Team Decision Category. During high school, he is a four-year member of the varsity swim team being, swim team captain one year and on Student Council for one year.  He is a member and co-founder of the ping pong club, a member of the outdoor recreation club and a member of the Waves swim team. Buck will be attending Colorado School of Mines to major in Chemical Engineering. He is the son of Anne and Keith Buck.

April 2015 - Kyle Claburne and Liliana Haus

Kyle Clayburne has attended NBHS for the past four years.  Clayburne is an Advanced Placement (AP) Scholar and a member of the National Honor Society. He played varsity football for the past three years and has been named Academic All-District (2013), Academic All-State (2014) and 1st Team (2014). Clayburne was also a varsity baseball player, FFA member and Team Captain of the NBHS Shotgun Team. During high school, he served as a 4H Officer in the positions of Treasurer and Secretary and won the title of Comal County Claybusters 2012 4H State Shotgun Champion. Clayburne will be attending Texas A&M University to major in Aeronautical Engineering as part of the Corps of Cadets. Upon graduation from A&M he plans to join the U.S. Navy as a commissioned officer. He is the Son of Joseph and Diana Clayburne.

Liliana Haus has attended NBHS for the last four years.  During her time at NBHS, she served on the State Leo Club Board of Directors along with being Leo Club Secretary 2011-2014 and Vice President for 2014-2015.  She is a member of the National Honor Society, Technology Student Association, First Tech Challenge Team, and the NBHS Bowling Team. She is also a 2014 graduate of the Chamber’s Youth Leadership New Braunfels. During the past three summers, she has worked as a lifeguard at Schlitterbahn Waterpark. She plans to attend the University of Texas at Dallas and major in Mechanical Engineering. She hopes to double major in Mechanical and Industrial Engineering. She is the daughter of Ralph and Debra Haus.

March 2015 - Mariah Sanders and Jordan Duran
Mariah Sanders has attended NBHS for the last four years.  During her time at NBHS, she served as President of the National Honor Society, Team Captain of the Science Olympiad, and a District Representative for Student Council. She also participated in the UIL Math and Science Competition, served as the Major for the Monocera Dance Team and as President of the Varsity Acappella Choir. Sanders plans to study chemical engineering at the Colorado School of Mines. She is the daughter of Gene and Cindy Sanders.

Jordan Duran has attended NBHS for the past four years. Duran was recognized as an AP Scholar, is a two-year member of the National Honor Society and was the Vice President of the German Club his junior year. He was in band all four years of high school and has earned several 1st division ratings at UIL Solo and Ensemble Competitions as a saxophone player. He is a member of the Silver Band, served as Drum Major his senior year and was an officer of the Texas Future Music Educators for two years. Duran will be attending Texas State University to major in Music Studies and plans to obtain a teacher certification so he can teach music. He is the son of Ezekiel and Lisa Duran.

February 2015 - Tran Le and Drew Renken
Tran Le has attended New Braunfels High School for the last two years.  During her time at NBHS, she served as a member of the Student Council in the role of Senior Class Secretary, was named to the National Honor Society, elected Treasurer for Key Club and participated in Science Academic UIL. She was also a member of the JV tennis team and a Unicorn Handler. In her spare time, she volunteers for the New Braunfels Public Library. Le is waiting for college decisions to be announced on April 1. She plans to study Political Science and would like to be a politician or an education activist for the equity of public education and access to higher education. She is the daughter of Dy Le.

Drew Renken has attended NBHS all four years of his high school career. He is a member of the National Honor Society, the Chapter Vice President for the Business Professionals of America (BPA), a four-year veteran and section leader in the NBHS Marching Band and the lead saxophonist in the NBHS Jazz Band.  He also has been named a Hispanic National Merit Scholar and BPA state finalist in Web design. Renken plans on attending Barrett Honors College at Arizona State University on a full scholarship.  He is the son of David and Norma Renken.

January 2015 - Abigail Grieve and Matthew Schwarz
Abigail Grieve has attended NBHS her entire high school career.  During her time at NBHS, she was a member of the Student Council serving as Class President her junior year and homecoming and alumni coordinator her junior and senior year.  She was also a member of the dance team and served as Major her junior year and Lt. Colonel her senior year.  During her junior year, she attended the National Youth Leadership Forum on Medicine, was a member of the Physics Club, HOSA, and a member of the Science Olympiad.  Her senior year she was Co-Captain of the Science Olympiad, choreographed the 2015 production of Grease, and a member of HOSA.  Outside of school, she is a Junior Volunteer at Christus Santa Rosa Hospital and a member of the Illusion Dance Center Competition Dance Team.  Grieve has her eye set on attending Texas Christian University, Southern Methodist University, or the University of Texas and plans on majoring in Neuroscience.  Her career goals are to become a physician and possibly a surgeon.  She is the daughter of Timothy and Hollie Grieve.

Matthew Schwarz has attended NBHS for the past 3 years.  Schwarz is the Cadet Lieutenant Colonel and Battalion Commander of the New Braunfels High School Marine Corps JROTC. He is a member of the National Honor Society and has attended the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards in which he became a counselor.  He has also attended Texas Boys State. Schwarz plans to attend Texas A&M University using a National ROTC Scholarship Award worth up to $180,000.  After graduation, he plans to serve in the United States Marine Corps as a commissioned officer.  He is the son of Stephen and Melinda Schwarz.

December 2014 - Amanda Gonzales and Dustin Paulos

Amanda Gonzales has attended NBISD her entire school career.  During her time at NBHS, she was a member of the National Honor Society and is currently ranked 9th in her class. She is a four-sport athlete lettering in basketball, volleyball, track and cross-country. Her numerous athletic accolades include: New Braunfels Herald Zeitung’s 2014 Top 10 Comal County Female Athletes list, a member of the 2014 Volleyball Co-District Championship team, Texas Girls Coaches Association 2014 All-State Volleyball Team, 2014 1st Team All-District Volleyball where she lead the district in assists, 2014 1st Team All-District Basketball, a member of the 2014 Cross Country District and Region IV Championship Team, 2014 State Cross Country meet qualifier, 2014 Under Armour All American Volleyball Watch List, 2014 Leander Volleypalooza All-Tournament Team, 2013 member of the NBHS Area Championship and Regional Quarterfinalist Volleyball team. She also was recognized as Academic All District in 2013-2014 for all sports.  In her spare time, she volunteers as a peer mentor for students with autism at the Activity Department at Kirkwood Manor Nursing Home, works with the NBISD Bilingual Pre-Kindergarten Summer School Program and at summer basketball camps.  Gonzales will be attending The University of Texas at San Antonio on a volleyball scholarship where she plans to major in General Mathematical Studies.  She would like to be a high school math teacher and volleyball coach.  She is the daughter of Freddy and Leticia Gonzales.

Dustin Paulos has attended NBHS for the past 4 years. While attending NBHS, he was a member of the National Honor Society, a delegate to Texas Boys State, attended Youth Leadership New Braunfels his sophomore year. Paulos was also a Media Correspondent his junior year, on the Blue Crew his senior year, DECA President his junior and senior year, a BPA member, and on the TSA Competition team his senior year. He participated in track and football his freshman year and has been captain of the basketball team all four years. He has volunteered with the Kids Club Basketball Club along with being a youth basketball head coach for the YMCA and Spurs League teams. He plans to attend either Texas A&M, University of Texas, or the Colorado School of Mines to study petroleum engineering.  He is the son of David and Sandy Paulos.

November 2014 - Keomi Hamlin and Dorian Rosales

Keomi Hamlin has attended NBHS her entire high school career.  During this time she has been a member of The National Honor Society, President of the Key Club and held an officer position for two years. She is a member of the French Club and spearheaded the benefit for NBHS counselor, Mrs. Torres that raised $16,000. She participated in cross country and track where she lettered all four years. She was part of the District Cross Country championship team, a State Qualifier all four years and a member of the 2013 State Runner-up team.  She likes to spend her time volunteering at Tree of Life Church for Vacation Bible School, the New Braunfels Little League’s Fun Day and for the Booster club at football games.  She plans to continue running in college at Colorado Christian University and major in Sports Psychology. She hopes to be a college cross country coach.  She is the daughter of Michael and Michelle Hamlin.

Dorian Rosales has attended NBHS for four years. While attending high school, he was a member of the German Club and ran cross country his freshman and sophomore years. He became involved with ITSA Academics his junior and senior year and is a two-year Cyberpatriot.  Last year his team won 8th place in the Cyberpatriot Nationals and is headed to Nationals again this year.  He has also been a part of the Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA) organization the last two years.  He enjoys teaching Linux and Windows after school with Mrs. Trollinger along with running, running and more running.  He plans to attend the University of Texas for a degree in Network Engineering.  One day he would like to teach and live in Germany or Alaska since Texas is too hot.  He is the son of Pete Rosales and Stephanie Goedecke.

October 2014 - David Lloyd and Shayna Underwood

David Lloyd has attended NBHS for 4 years.  He is a member of the National Honor Society, the football team and the Mighty Unicorn Band.  He participates in UIL Academics and is a member of New Braunfels Presbyterian Church.  He plans on attending college and majoring in Chemical Engineering and Computer Science.  He is the son of Renee and Daniel Lloyd.

Shayna Underwood has attended NBHS for the past 4 years.  During this time she has served as Vice President of the Key Club, Swim Team Captain, and a two-time state cross-country runner.  She is a member of the National Honor Society, Ambassador for the Alliance for a Healthier Generation and a recipient of the Texas Rising Star award.  She participated in the Science Olympiad and UIL Math Competition.  She is a member of the Youth Citizens Council of New Braunfels and a board member for Healthy Schools.  Underwood enjoys artwork and going on mission trips with her church. She plans to continue competitive swim in college and double major in Environmental Engineering and Politics.  She is the daughter of Sid and Sheri Underwood.

September 2014 - Andrea Alvarez and Conner O'Toole
Andrea Alvarez has attended NBHS her entire high school career.  During this time she has been a member of the Pink Ninjas (a woman’s support group), the Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA), the Outdoor Recreation Club and the color guard/winter guard. This summer, Andrea attended the National Hispanic Institute in Austin.  She speaks fluent Spanish after completing five years of Spanish classes at NBHS. She is involved in “Humanities Spring,” a work-study program abroad based in Assisi, Italy. She is also a teacher’s assistant at Holy Family Catholic Church.   Alvarez plans to attend college to major in Nutrition and/or Airrosti (soft tissue injuries) and to study abroad.  Her future plans in life are to travel around the world helping people.  She is the daughter of Ana Maria Arroyo and David Alvarez.

Connor O’Toole is a member of the National Honor Society and DECA where he competed in the International Competition. He is involved with athletics as a member of the track team and has been a varsity football player for the last three years. His other activities include Science Olympiad and Kids Club.  O’Toole has not decided on which college to attend, but plans to major in Mechanical Engineering. He is the son of Kevin and Sharon O’Toole.
