Mary Helen Phillips, 2020 NBISD Silver Unicorn Recipient

Mary Helen Phillips

2020 Silver Unicorn Recipient

Since 2013, Phillips has been sharing her love of education through gardening at NBISD campuses. She has influenced thousands of students across our District. She has been instrumental in starting and sustaining the school gardens throughout NBISD. She has introduced the Junior Master Gardener program throughout the schools and coordinates the lessons monthly with teachers at all campuses

Additionally, she has served on the NBISD School Health Advisory Council (SHAC) since 2016. She coordinates garden training for teachers and parents to help provide them with the tools to garden with their children. She provides them with donated seeds and transplant plants to be used at campuses.

Another great accomplishment is that she coordinates the annual Comal County Master Gardener’s Insect Expo. In collaboration with Texas AgriLife, she leads a team that has reached Comal County 4th graders each year since 2018. Countless volunteer hours are provided to make this experience exciting for our youth.
