SILVER UNICORN AWARD

ABOUT THE AWARD

The Silver Unicorn is intended to provide appropriate recognition of individuals in the community who have rendered outstanding service to the children and youth of the New Braunfels Independent School District. This award is one of distinction and special honor from the District. After the inception of the program in 1965, no more than three awards shall be made annually.
 
NOMINATION INFORMATION


THE 2018 NOMINATION PERIOD IS NOW CLOSED.
 
Nomination guidelines to consider:
  1. Recognition of an individual in the community who has rendered outstanding service to the children and youth of NBISD.
  2. District employees are eligible after five years of service to NBISD.
  3. Board members are only eligible after serving six years on the Board and having completed their term. Current trustees are not eligible.
  4. Awards may be presented posthumously.

 

This nomination form must include the following:
  • Written recommendation of no more than 1 page, one-side only (type size no smaller than 10 point) by nominator(s) stating why the individual should receive this special honor.
  • Name and contact information for the nominee
  • Name, contact information and signature of the nominator.
  • No petitions nor signature pages are allowed. 
  • No late nominations shall be accepted.

2018 SILVER UNICORN AWARD RECIPIENTS


CATHY HINMAN

Cathy Hinman is a 1965 Unicorn graduate and native of New Braunfels. Her career path led her back to New Braunfels ISD. She began her teaching career in New Braunfels ISD nearly 50 years ago and has taught thousands of students at Carl Schurz, Walnut Springs, Lone Star and now Veramendi Elementary. During her career, she has taught several generations of families including some of the grandchildren of former students. She is passionate about teaching 1st graders and has a unique ability to help students love reading.

She is a highly dedicated professional who knows how to motivate her students to strive for excellence and continues to be a lifelong learner herself. One of her colleagues describes her as a remarkable person and friend, and an extraordinary teacher, mentor and leader.


RIGO MONTERO

Rigo Montero has served the NBISD community wholeheartedly for many years. As a parent at Carl Schurz Elementary, he served as PTA President. He has served on the Comal County Child Welfare Board for many years, as well as a sponsor/chaperone for several church youth group mission trips.  


In 2008, he successfully ran for the NBISD School Board and was elected to represent District 2. During his nine-year term, he served as Board President and Board Secretary. He always placed the needs of the district’s students and teachers as his utmost priority, and could be counted on to provide leadership.

Montero is employed as a hospital social worker. He and his wife, Rosalinda, have one daughter who graduated from NBHS in 2016.
