James Bettersworth
Board President

James Bettersworth, an 18-year resident of NBISD was elected to the Board of Trustees in 2009. He was re-elected for his 3rd term in May of 2015 and is currently serving his second year as board president.

Bettersworth, a practicing attorney and owner of The Bettersworth Law Firm, has also served on the Comal County United Way Board for more than 5 year.

He and his wife, Sherry, have three school-aged children attending NBISD.  

Sherry Harrison
Vice President

Sherry Harrison, first elected to the Board of Trustees in May of 2009, served as Board Secretary for a year and Vice President from 2011-2012.  She was re-elected in May of 2012 and again in May of 2015 for her third term where she continues to serve as vice president.

A 15-year resident of NBISD, Harrison volunteers at the NBISD elementary school libraries, delivers Meals on Wheels, serves as officer/chairperson for the Mid-Texas Symphony and is a member of the City of NB Arts and Culture Task Force.

She and husband Matthew have two daughters both of who were distinguished graduates of NBISD.  
 
Joe Hassmann

Joe Hassmann moved to NBISD in February 2006. The self-employed/broker/owner of Hassmann Real Estate Group Inc., decided to run for School Board in 2011 to contribute and serve the community and students of NBISD. 

He was re-elected in 2014 and is currently serving his third year as board secretary. He and his wife Patricia have one school-aged child attending NBISD. 
 

Wes Clark

Wes Clark, a 1999 graduate of NBHS, was elected to the board in 2013 and reelected in 2016. Clark decided to run for school board to serve the community that he loves and to join in the process of trying to provide and excellent education for all the students of NBISD.

Clark, the vice president of Rocky Hill Equipment Rentals, also volunteers his time coaching youth sports in a number of New Braunfels community organizations including the NBYSA, UPWARD, NBLL, YMCA and CYO.

He and wife, Christina, have three children attending NBISD.  

David Heefner

Dave Heefner, a resident of New Braunfels for the past 33 years, retired from teaching in 2015 after 21 years in NBISD at Carl Schurz and Oak Run Middle School. Over the past several years he has received several awards including being named a Silver Unicorn and NBISD District Secondary Teacher of the Year. Heefner, an avid artist and musician, is a member of the contemporary service band at First Protestant Church. After retirement he has also spent time mentoring students at Oak Run Middle School. 

He and his wife, Tammye, have two daughters that both attended NBISD. 

Rigo Montero

Rigo Montero, elected to the Board in 2009, has served four years at board president (2010-2014) and one year as Board Secretary (2009-2010). He now holds the title of trustee.

Montero decided to run for School Board in honor of his parents. They were very involved in his and his siblings’ education and especially with his younger sister who has special needs. Prior to running for the Board, Montero was involved with the PTA.

A hospital social worker, he is also actively involved with the Men’s ACTS Ministry at St. Peter & Paul Catholic Church, volunteers with the Teen ACTS and LifeTeen at St. Peter & Paul Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus Council #4183 member and a board member of The Children’s Advocacy Center of Comal County.

He and his wife Rosalinda have one daughter who attends New Braunfels High School. They have resided in New Braunfels since 2002.  

Keith D. Smith

Keith D. Smith was elected to the Board of Trustees in 2010 and reelected in 2013 and 2016. After an honorable discharge from the United States Marine Corps, he returned to New Braunfels with his family and has been a resident of NBISD for the past 21 years. He is a general contractor, remodeling homes and businesses since moving to New Braunfels. His wife and daughter are both NBHS graduates.
